PCB Via Stromstärke Capacity & Temp Rise Calculator

This calculator estimates the current carrying capacity, temperature rise, resistance, voltage drop, and power loss of a PCB via based on the IPC-2152 and IPC-2221 standards.

As you change parameters, JavaScript calculates the output and adjusts the values in real-time.

Via Sizing Equations & Standards Reference

Via Wall Cross-Sectional Area:
The copper cross-sectional area in the via barrel is approximated by modeling the plated cylinder:
$$A = \pi \times (D - t) \times t$$ Where \(D\) is the finished drill hole diameter and \(t\) is the copper plating wall thickness (typically 25μm or 1mil).

Allowable Stromstärke & Temp Rise:
The connection between current and temperature rise uses standard IPC-2221 equations:
$$I = k \times \Delta T^{0.44} \times A^{0.725}$$ Where \(k = 0.024\) for internal trace layers (embedded inside the dielectric) and \(0.048\) for external trace layers.
